How to Password Protect a Gaussian Splat

Updated February 2026 · 2 min read

Not every 3D scan should be public. Whether you're sharing confidential product designs, client work, or personal captures, password protection keeps your splats secure.

When to Use Password Protection

Step-by-Step Guide

1 Upload Your Splat

Log into SplatHost and upload your PLY or SPLAT file. Wait for processing to complete.

2 Open Splat Settings

In your dashboard, find the splat you want to protect and click the ⚙️ Settings icon.

3 Set Privacy to Private

Toggle the Privacy setting from "Public" to "Private".

4 Add a Password

Enter a secure password. This can be:

Click Save to apply the password.

5 Share the Link

Copy the shareable link and send it to your recipient. Send the password separately (via email, Slack, or text) for security.

Pro Tip: Anyone with the link AND password can view your splat. The password doesn't expire unless you change it or remove it.

How It Works (For Recipients)

When someone visits your password-protected splat link, they'll see a password prompt:

  1. They enter the password you provided
  2. If correct, they get 24-hour access (stored in a cookie)
  3. After 24 hours, they'll need to re-enter the password

Changing or Removing Passwords

To Change the Password

Go to Settings → Enter a new password → Save. The old password will stop working immediately.

To Remove Password Protection

Go to Settings → Clear the password field → Save. Your splat will become publicly accessible again (if set to Public).

Security Note: Password protection is designed for basic privacy, not enterprise-level security. For highly sensitive files, consider using private cloud storage with encryption.

Alternative Privacy Options

Unlisted (Link-Only)

If you don't need password protection but want to keep your splat off public galleries, use "Unlisted" mode. Only people with the direct link can access it.

Expiring Links (Pro Plan)

Set an expiration date for your splat. After the date, the link will automatically stop working.
