How to Export Luma AI to PLY File
Luma AI creates stunning 3D captures using your iPhone, but getting those files into a shareable PLY format requires a few extra steps. This guide shows you exactly how to do it.
What You'll Need
- A Luma AI account with at least one 3D capture
- Access to the Luma web app (lumalabs.ai)
- A SplatHost account (optional, for hosting)
Step-by-Step Export Process
1 Open Luma AI Web App
Go to lumalabs.ai and log into your account. Your 3D captures will appear in the dashboard.
2 Select Your Capture
Click on the 3D scan you want to export. Wait for the viewer to load fully.
3 Click Export
Look for the Export or Share button in the top-right corner of the viewer.
4 Choose Download Format
In the export menu, select:
- Download (not "Share Link")
- PLY or Gaussian Splat format
The download will start immediately. File sizes are typically 5-50MB.
5 Upload to SplatHost (Optional)
Once downloaded, you can:
- Drag and drop the .ply file to SplatHost
- Get a shareable link in seconds
- Embed it in your website or portfolio
.ply (point cloud) or .splat (Gaussian Splat) format. Both work with SplatHost, but .splat files are smaller and load faster.
Troubleshooting
Export button is grayed out
Wait for the scene to finish processing. Luma AI typically takes 20-30 minutes after capture to generate the exportable file.
File is too large (>50MB)
If you're on SplatHost's free plan, you can:
- Upgrade to Pro (supports up to 500MB)
- Use Luma's "Optimized" export option (smaller file size)
Downloaded file won't open
Make sure the file extension is .ply or .splat. If it downloaded as .zip, extract it first.
